Outdoors: Nature helps military veterans, disabled feel free

We want to thank the Detroit Free Press for sharing the story of Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors and helping shine a light on the healing power of the outdoors.

The article highlights something we believe deeply: time spent outside can be more than recreation — it can be a meaningful part of healing, connection, and recovery for veterans and individuals facing health challenges. Whether it is hunting, fishing, exploring nature, or simply being surrounded by others who understand, these outdoor experiences can help restore confidence, build friendships, and create moments of peace.

At MiOFO, our mission is to help remove barriers so wounded veterans and individuals with health challenges can enjoy Michigan’s great outdoors in a supportive and accessible way. Through partnerships, volunteers, adaptive equipment, and outdoor recreation opportunities, we are honored to help participants reconnect with nature and with one another.

We are grateful to the Detroit Free Press for recognizing this important work and for helping share the impact that Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors continues to have in the lives of veterans, individuals with disabilities, and their families.
