We hosted the David Pollie Classic essay contest to help provide a tracked wheelchair to an individual with a medical need who would otherwise be unable to obtain one. The contest was created in honor of David Pollie, whose love for the outdoors continued after he became paralyzed, even though a standard wheelchair limited his ability to hunt and enjoy time outside with his brother.
David’s family and community once came together to help raise funds for a tracked wheelchair, and an anonymous donor helped make that dream possible. In that same spirit of generosity, MiOFO continues to honor David’s legacy by helping others experience greater freedom, independence, and access to Michigan’s outdoors.
Tracked wheelchairs are battery-powered chairs designed for off-road use, allowing individuals to navigate trails, sand, snow, and shallow water. Through partnerships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and other supporters, MiOFO helps expand accessible outdoor recreation opportunities for people with health challenges, connecting them with nature, adventure, and a supportive community.
