OUR STORY

Why MiOFO Exists

Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was created in 2014 to help wounded veterans and individuals with health challenges reconnect with nature in meaningful, accessible ways. What began as a mission to remove barriers has grown into a network of support, opportunity, and hope for people across Michigan.

MiOFO exists because outdoor experiences should not be limited by injury, disability, or health challenges. Everyone deserves the chance to experience the freedom, peace, and renewal that nature can bring. The outdoors can provide more than recreation. It can provide peace, confidence, connection, and a renewed sense of independence. At MiOFO, every experience is designed to help participants feel supported, valued, and empowered.

OUR TEAM

Thomas Jones

PRESIDENT, Founder

I am a combat veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, Artillery, and served two tours in Iraq in 2003 and 2005. In 2014, I founded Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors, where we’ve been providing accessible hunting blinds to expand access to the outdoors for everyone. I’ve worked closely with the Michigan DNR to ensure our public lands are inviting to everyone, regardless of how they get out there.

I previously co-chaired the DNR’s Accessibility Advisory Council, helping to improve access in all regards on public lands. When I’m not helping on the next project, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my wife and three children, cherishing the freedom it brings.

Lynda Leibrock

SECRETARY/TREASURER

Lynda Leibrock is a Certified Nonprofit Professional whose experience spans over 40 years in Executive Leadership; 25 of those in Nonprofit Management.  She founded her own consulting businesses in 2010, Cornerstone Business Services, LLC  & The Nonprofit Training Institute and has enjoyed working with individuals and businesses, empowering them to reach their full potential.  She is an international author and presenter on How to Start a Nonprofit Curriculum, Budgeting, Grant Management and Compliance. 

Her leadership skills and vital nonprofit experience are the tools she brings to equip individuals, business owners and organizations with the necessary resources needed to become successful.

Lynda is mission-driven and outgoing with a positive attitude making a difference in someone’s life every day.

Tom Mitchell

VICE PRESIDENT

My name is Tom Mitchell — husband, father, follower of Christ, and passionate outdoorsman. I proudly work with one of the nation’s leading real estate companies, where my focus is creating the best possible experience for every client I serve.

Outside of work, you’ll find me in the outdoors chasing ducks in the marsh, fishing for walleye, perch, and bass, or simply enjoying the peace that nature provides. I strongly believe in the healing and restorative power of the outdoors and have made it a personal mission to share those experiences with others.

Since joining MIOFO in 2025, I’ve dedicated my time to giving back to the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedoms. My passion is helping veterans reconnect through the outdoors, creating meaningful experiences that inspire healing, fellowship, and purpose.

David Foy

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR/Northern Michigan Liaison

I have never served in the military, but for more than a decade, I have made it a priority to give back to those who have. Outside of my work in engineering, I have volunteered with various organizations that support veterans through outdoor hunting and fishing opportunities.

In 2024, I met Tom Jones and learned about Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors. I immediately connected with MiOFO’s mission and knew it was an organization I wanted to be part of.

I have always enjoyed the outdoors, and the opportunity to help disabled veterans and civilians experience that same sense of freedom, adventure, and connection is something I am passionate about. I hope to see you in the woods or on the water.

William Emerson, PH.D.

Veteran resource liaison

Dr. Will Emerson is an avid hunter living in rural Michigan. His current occupation focuses on workforce development and apprenticeships. Previously, he founded the Veteran Office at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and was the Director of Student Success Initiatives at the Michigan Association of State Universities (MASU).  Dr. Emerson has a Ph.D. in American Culture and is a US Army Veteran.
